From Christchurch to Auckland

Day 1: catch me if you can
Apres 2 jours d’attente nous prenons enfin la route du nord vendredi soir, nous avons 5 jours pour rallier Auckland. Nous longeons la cote est avec pour objectif d’avoir le dernier ferry de la journee. La route est magnifique, montagne a gauche, mer a droite. Il n’y a pas beaucoup d’endroits ou s’arreter, on ne regrette donc pas d’etre en route. Enfin nous nous arretons quand meme, pour prendre un auto stoppeur, un allemand de 19 ans qui a un probleme technique avec son velo. Pour une fois c’est nous qui rendons service! On réussit a attraper le ferry de 23h, nous arrivons donc a Wellington a 2h du matin. Pas d’hébergement, la seule solution est donc de dormir dans la voiture…on a beau avoir un super 4×4 ça n’est pas très confortable…
Day 2: l’illumination
Nous reprenons la route le lendemain matin en direction de Taihape. Nous nous arretons a Porirua ou a lieu la fete locale annuelle. L’occasion de faire le plein de gadgets, fruits, bouteille d’eau, dentifrice et brosses a dents (oui il y’avait un stand Colgate!!), Jess testera meme une methode japonaise d’accès a la lumiere; et maintenant elle rayonne plus que jamais!
Day 3: Anne et Jess à la ferme
Nous arrivons dans la soirée chez Angus, notre hote a Taihape. Il est fermier et vit avec une passionnée de chevaux: ils ont 850 moutons, 40 vaches, 1 cochon, 3 chiens, 1 chat et 6 chevaux, top! Ils sont adorables et nous passons la journée de dimanche avec eux: balade à cheval dans la montagne le matin, rafting l’après-midi (oui parce qu’ils ont un bateau aussi!). Le soir ils nous préparent un excellent steak salade et après cette fantastique journée nous nous endormons comme des bébés, et dans un vrai lit svp!
Day 4: journée explosive
Lundi grosse journée de route, mais nous profitons quand meme des attraits de la région: le volcan Mont Rohaperu, le lac Taupo (le plus grand de NZ), les Hoka Falls (qui peuvent remplir 5 piscines olympiques a la minute), les sources d’eau chaude et lac de Roturuoa. Nous arrivons le soir sur la côte est du pays a Mont Maunganui, ou nous sommes hébergées par Gay de la famille de Gregg. Elle nous fait directement faire un tour guidé de la ville, une bande de terre le long du Pacifique, magnifique au coucher du soleil. Nous passons une agréable soirée en sa compagnie, encore de bons repas et un bon lit, on apprécie!
Day 5: objectif atteint!
Le lendemain nous montons au Mont et profitons du soleil pour admirer la vue sur la baie avant de nous mettre en route pour notre destination finale, Auckland! Nous y arrivons mardi en fin d’après-midi, et on a même eu le temps de faire un détour par l’agence Maui de l’aéroport (devinez pourquoi)! Amusez vous avec les photos de notre road trip!

Day 1: catch me if you can
After waiting 2 days at the airport we finally get our great free SUV, we have 5 days to get to Auckland. We drive along the East Coast, our objective is to catch the last ferry of the day. The scenery is beautiful, sea on our right, mountains on our left, we enjoy it! We even took a hitch hiker, a young German cycling NZ who had a technical problem with his bike. We hitched so much we were so pleased to take someone! We managed to catch the 11 pm ferry so we arrived in Wellington at 2 am. Everything is closed so the only solution is to sleep in the car, and even if we have a great 4×4 it is not so comfortable…

Day 2: the enlightment
We hit the road the following morning in the direction of Taihape. We stop on the way for breakfast in Porirua where we go to the annual locl festival. A good opportunity to gather various goodies including fruits, toothpaste, toothbrush, water, toys etc…Jess will even try a Japanese method of receiving light; she is beaming!

Day 3: Anne and Jess staying at the farm
We arrived in the evening at Angus’ s place; he lives in a farm with his partner who is fond of horses, they have 850 sheeps, 40 cows, 1 pig, 3 dogs and 1 cat, we love it! They are relly so we spend Sunday with them: horse riding in the beautiful mountains in the morning, rafting in the gorge in the afternoon. They even prepare us a delicious dinner, and we then go to bed and sleep like babies (but in a real bed!).

Day 4: explosive day
We spend a lot of time driving on Monday but we still stop to see the main sights: the volcano Mt Ruapehu, the Taupo lake (NZ biggest), Hoka Falls (fill 5 olympic pools every minute!), famous hot springs and the Roturoa lake. We reach the East coast of the island in the evening: we are staying in Mt Maunganui at Gay’s (Gregg’s family) and she directly drives us for a guided tour of the city, a peninsula along the Pacific ocean, this is stunning at sunset! We enjoy our dinner and our evening with her, and once again we sleep very well in a real bed, thank you!

Day 5: where we reach our objective!
On Tuesday we climb up the Mt Maunganui before hitting the road to Auckland. The weather is great and the view from the top is just jaw dropping! We reach Auckland on time, we even have time to drop our bags at our host’s place and to do some shopping before dropping off the car. That was a quick road trip but we’ve seen and done so much, thanks everyone! Enjoy the pictures and movies!
